New Mexico Hazmat Challenge

Sponsoring Organization:
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)

The Hazmat Challenge is an annual training event for regional Hazmat response teams from New Mexico and around the Nation. The event is hosted by LANL Emergency Operations Division, Emergency Response Group. Teams participating respond to simulated hazardous materials problems in a safe, non-hazardous environment. The event includes eight scenarios involving props such as railroad transportation, chemical laboratories, industrial plumbing problems and motor vehicle incidents. For 2013 we have the privilege of offering the opportunity for students in grades 6 through 12 to visit the Hazmat Challenge and gain experience in what these specialized teams do. There are 15 openings available for students and an adult chaperone to attend a three hour on Wednesday July 31 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Students will experience hands on learning with equipment, gear, tools, and skills used by Hazmat Teams. This will include an opportunity to observe teams competing and to address a hazmat problem in a virtual training environment. Openings are available on a first com first served basis. Applications for the event are due by Tuesday July 23, 2013. At this time the student event is open only to U.S. citizens. For information please and to submit applications, contact Chris Rittner, LANL EO-ER, at crittner@lanl.gov or 505-606-2109 by COB July 23, 2013.
